Community
Being connected to community is especially significant
for someone with Younger Onset Dementia who may
have had to give up paid employment as a result of
their diagnosis. This is different from someone older,
who may already have retired and the loss of
community connection can be felt very deeply.
Depending on the type of employment they may be
able to continue for some time.
If not in paid employment, one way in which
community connectedness can be supported is by
volunteering. If the person living with dementia has a
particular interest or skill, setting up a volunteer role
can be valuable in reconnecting with their community
in a different way. In a supported living environment,
connection with individuals or groups who come into
the care facility, or support to continue to access
familiar groups in the community, can assist greatly in
maintaining a sense of connectedness.
