however they will vary in the ways in which dementia
affects this part of their lives. Some people may
continue to desire sexual contact, while others may
lose interest. Others may demonstrate inappropriate
sexual expressions which can impact on others,
particularly in a supported care environment.
Partners may also find that their feelings about
sexuality may change, with uncertainty over the new
or different ways of relating. The caring role may also
impact how the relationship is viewed, by both
partners.
If the person living with dementia transitions into a
supported residential care environment, a new
challenge can be found, with a lack of privacy, shared
rooms and the fear of judgment from others often
impacting the ability of partners to share intimacy
and sexuality.
