4. Autonomy

Autonomy is also described as liberty or self-
governance; self-determination; immunity from the
arbitrary exercise of authority; having rights and
choices and having freedom [8].

The fourth area of wellbeing is autonomy. The
following will be discussed in relation to autonomy:

      ? Involvement in decision-making processes
      ? Self expression
      ? Communication

Think about the person living with Younger Onset
Dementia that you support. Take a moment to reflect
how full of autonomy their glass would be.

     Involvement in Decision-making processes
Autonomy as it relates to supporting someone living
with dementia can seem a challenging goal. However,
when an individual is given the autonomy to choose
for themselves, to exercise their right to say “NO” and
