to be treated as an adult with the ability to make
decisions based on personal preferences, then this can
have a significant impact on wellbeing. Autonomy is
more than choosing between two options, it is being
informed and asked and respected even if the
response is not what is expected.

Lack of autonomy can lead to a “learned
helplessness”, where the person being supported
gives up on trying to be heard, leading to a higher level
of impairment than is actually present [10]. This has a
significant impact for both the supporter and the
person being supported, with decreased wellbeing for
both people as a result.

Self-expression is the ability to be unique and continue
to express traits and characteristics that define who
we are.
