P. 54
With a diagnosis of dementia, particularly for
someone with Younger Onset Dementia, the risks of
being over-shadowed by the stigma of this diagnosis
means that the sense of self can easily be at risk due
to the significant life changes being experienced as
well as the perceptions of others. Being able to
maintain a sense of self-expression, whether that is
through support to participate in activities of leisure
or work that have previously brought enjoyment, is
part of being able to maintain a strong sense of self
and to live well with a diagnosis of dementia.
Communication
Communication may be challenging when faced with
a client/resident displaying behaviour as an
expression of unmet need (often referred to as
Behavioural & Psychological Symptoms of Dementia:
BPSD). Bernie McCarthy, Clinical Psychologist and
Dementia Advisor, responds to a question about
aggression as an expression of unmet needs (2mins).
