Once a person is diagnosed with dementia, the
opportunities for taking risks, growth and change
become fewer and fewer until life can become a series
of pre-planned, ‘safe’ events, with minimal risks
available to take.
Many people living with dementia, particularly those
living with dementia at a younger age; have reported
this kind of risk-adverse support can make them feel
like they are not being entrusted to make decisions for
themselves, reducing their enjoyment and
opportunities for personal growth. Supported risks
are vital to assist people to continue to grow and
change and to maintain wellbeing.
Ken, diagnosed in his mid-50s with Alzheimer’s
disease said, “I like to push things, do things
that are scary – it makes me realise how alive
I am.”
